In the first game in Tampa Bay this season, the Rays gave their fans a good game with a great comeback and walk-off win scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth inning. Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson hit two two-run homers; one in the first inning, and again in the fourth inning, driving in all four Mariners runs. Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, narrowing the Mariners lead to two runs. Then a wild bottom of the ninth inning drove in three runs and a Rays walk-off victory. With the game tied, and runners on first and second running, Akinori Iwamura hit a bloop single the opposite way scoring Rocco Baldelli who was on second base for the walk-off victory. Starting pitcher James Shields pitched seven innings giving up all four runs on five hits and striking out six.
